It Is Completely Okay to Be Scared

Jun 23, 2016

I'm just landing back from 2 weeks in Switzerland with my family.

I've been immersed in Mama-Land, playing non-stop, soaking in the mountain of moments at the side of my 1/4 Swiss son :) 24 hours a day.

For Today, I share one particular moment with you from my time in Switzerland.

Oskar had been wanting to ride a horse for a while. When I told him that today was his day to ride his first horse, his lips suddenly quivered and his whole smile turned into a frown. I could tell that he was being visited by our friend, Fear.

I said, "Are you feeling scared?"
"Yessss" he stammered.

So we talked about Fear and how it shows up when we are about to try something new (or expand in some way). We talked about how it is completely okay to be scared. And that being scared doesn't mean you don't want to ride the horse. It just means that you have never ridden a horse before (and that this is new terrain). And it means that you have the chance to be courageous and get on the horse, even when you feel scared.

I was one proud Mama when we arrived at the stable and met Marselle, the Shetland Pony that would be taking Oskar for his first ride. I could tell Fear was still hanging out with Oskar. Yet, when the instructor asked, "Are you ready?" Oskar immediately said, "Yes."

With this, I turn to you and ask:
What new terrain are you being called to ride into?
And how are you experiencing Fear as you approach this next ride?
Are you willing to say Yes and get on your horse?!

And, in case you're curious, the ride was fun for all, and Oskar is now asking when he gets to ride Marselle again! :)
